External Wall Insulation

After our 2009 insulation project it was recognised that a number of homes within the village are of non-traditional construction. Due to the construction types of these homes it is often difficult to insulate them with cheaper and more traditional insulation measures such as cavity wall.

The majority of Fintry’s non-traditional homes are pre-fabricated Cruden Rural homes built in the 1950′s. The external walls are concrete panels tied to a light weight steel structure. Cruden Rural homes were built only in Scotland, specifically to meet the post-Second World War demand as temporary structures with minimal insulation. Because of the poor thermal efficiency of these properties, these households have high energy bills and CO2 emissions. Some of these homes also suffer from condensation dampness.

FDT has actively facilitated the installation of external wall insulation on many non-traditional properties within the community by utilising various funding streams. The first of which, led to the insulation of two of these homes was awarded by the Scottish Government. This funding was awarded to complete a pilot project showcasing how these homes could be successfully insulated, reducing their carbon footprint and increasing the level of comfort for the occupants.  The development trust was also able to access funding through the recent CERT scheme, with another handful of these properties being insulated by Scottish & Southern Energy. We are currently aiming to insulate the remainder of these homes and other non-traditional properties through the current ECO scheme.

The benefits of external wall insulation are extensive. In addition to helping to reduce CO2 emissions, it increases the thermal efficiency of the property, lowers heat loss and prevents draughts in the home. It can also improve the occupants health by prevent condensation dampness, mould and fungus growth. It also has the added benefit of reducing heating costs. External wall insulation also causes little disruption to the home owner by comparison to other internal insulation measures and it can also provide an improved aesthetic finish to the exterior of the house.
